Working as a Partner at Swanage Medical Practice in a beautiful part of Dorset combined with family life and sailing keeps me busy and grounded in the reality of General Practice. The application of knowledge continues to motivate me, as well as the challenges and rewards of consulting in the emotional front-line of undifferentiated diagnostic uncertainty.
About the Practice
Swanage is a popular seaside town at the entrance to the World Heritage Jurassic coastline. The medical practice is the only one in the town and covers a stable semi-rural population of 12,500. We have a large team covering an extensive range of services and achieve very high QoF points. There is a high prevalence of chronic disease principally because of the significant number of retired elderly residents. The local Cottage Hospital has Consultant outreach clinic from Poole and Dorchester with inpatient rehabilitation and palliative care beds.
We aim to provide high quality care in a rich training environment.
Special Interests within the practice
All GPs have admitting rights and one partner acts as Medical Director at Swanage Cottage Hospital and is a GPwSI in Cardiology undertaking treadmill testing and echocardiograms.
We have been a Training Practice for at least 17 years and also have final year medical student attachments from Southampton Medical School.
One partner is the lead GP for the Purbeck locality Practice based commissioning bid.
One Partner was Chair of the local Trust Executive committee and a member of Dorset Prescribing Forum.
Family Planning, INR monitoring, Foreign Travel, Childhood Imms & Health Surveillance, Smears, Chronic Disease Management, Insulin conversions, Leg Ulcer clinics, Chiropody, Minor Ops, Gold Standards Framework Palliative Care are all areas covered in-house.
Counselling, Drugs and Alcohol advice, Community Paediatrics, Pyschology, Community Physio, Community OT and a Consultant Psychogeriatric clinic are also run from the health centre.
