Rough Guide to Appraisal
GP appraisal is an annual event offered to all GPs in Dorset PCT and Bournemouth and Poole PCT, who are on the Performers Lists. Registrars should arrange an appraisal with their trainer before completion of the year.
The appraisal is a formative educational process informing personal development and learning. It is not a test. It also contributes to evidence that may need to be produced for revalidation. You will be contacted annually with a list of appraisers in your PCT who normally have an educational background. If you have not already been contacted with this please contact Peter Blick.
The Appraisal Process
You should not be appraised by the same individual for more than three years consecutively, so as to allow at least two appraisers within a five year period.
You should submit forms 1-3 to your appraiser prior to the appraisal. These may be obtained on the Department of Health website by typing appraisal in the search engine, from the NHS appraisal toolkit or from the Poole and Bournemouth PCT website or Dorset PCT website.
A form 4 and PDP template will be agreed at your appraisal to facilitate your planning of next year’s learning and development. A collated summary of all form 4’s will contribute to educational planning by the GP tutor team. Your completed form 4 and template will be retained confidentially by the GP tutor/appraisal team. Further guidance on PDPs and Learning Needs Assessment is available.
You are encouraged to keep a folder of evidence to support your personal development either in hard copy or on a computer based system. The educational team recognise that there are many different styles of learning and development, all of which are valid to the individual. If you need help and advice compiling these, your appraiser will be happy to assist.
We hope that we can make this journey of education and learning fun.
