About the Practice

Queens Avenue Surgery is located close to the centre of Dorchester just a few hundred yards from the local general hospital, Dorset County Hospital. Dorchester is a small county town in the centre of an area of outstanding natural beauty close to the coast. There are currently 3 full time and 2 part time partners based at the surgery;

We run a ten-minute appointment system. Registrars initially have 30-minute appointments before moving on to 15-minute then 10-minute appointment times. The practice moved to Queens Avenue a few years ago into a large converted Victorian house. Registrars have the benefit of a large room for his/her exclusive use. We aim to achieve a relaxed working atmosphere with good relationships within the team. The practice philosophy is that education should be part of our everyday working lives. All partners take part in giving tutorials, we have a regular "Journal Club" and "Significant Event Meetings" with the whole practice team, and our Practice Manager worked for many years in adult education before coming to Queens Avenue. Out-of-hours cover is provided by the local urgent care service. When registrars are ready to participate in out-of-hours cover, they do so initially with the trainer, Des Ling.

The proximity of the surgery to the Hospital can be advantageous to Registrars who wish to purchase property locally whilst on the training scheme, as well as when wishing to use the library and the Postgraduate Centre.

Special Interests within the practice

All the GPs in the practice work wholly within general practice and have no outside commitments.
