Elective and eGPR posts

The elective and eGPR posts in feature in some of the Dorchester rotations. These are innovative posts designed to meet individual trainees’ learning needs more closely than a fixed rotation.

The two posts – similar but different

The main differences between the two are as follows: The elective is generally based in hospital clinics with one of the Programme Organisers acting as educational supervisor. The eGPR includes a mixture of time in general practice and time in hospital outpatients etc, with the practice’s GP Trainer acting as the clinical supervisor.

Preparation

Before the post begins, you will be expected to plan your time. This will involve meeting your educational supervisor and undertaking some formal learning needs assessment. A suitable programme of activities is then agreed.

Typical Activities

Part of the idea behind these posts is that they should not be typical but tailored! However, trainees often include attendance in specialty clinics in subjects that they would not otherwise experience in their rotation (dermatology, rheumatology, etc..) Other activities have included undertaking courses, assisting at a hospice, community psychiatry etc...
