Course Organisers (COs)
The course organisers run the day release course for the GP registrars (ST3). They also assist on the ST1 & ST2 half day release course.
As with the POs, the COs see pastoral care as a major part of their remit. They are all approachable and keen to help the registrars with any problems that affect their working lives. The vocational training scheme is intended to prepare you for a lifetime in general practice and the influence of the course extends onwards into peoples careers. The COs are keen to hear how you are doing since leaving the course and to help if you need it (for other sources of help and advice see the resources page)
The COs are also keen to keep in touch with GP trainers. They'd love to
hear from trainers with ideas about the course, or if their trainees have
areas of need with which the Day Release Course can help.
Mark
Taylor works as a GP in Merley, Wimborne.
"I am a GP, Course Organiser, & GP trainer. I run a GP principal group & was previously an RCGP examiner. I still enjoy my clinical work in the Practice, but the best day of the week for me is Wednesday which I spend with a brilliant bunch of ST1,2, & 3 GP trainees. It is a fun relaxed day when I always learn a lot, so thanks to all of you for teaching me so much!"
On Wednesdays he is usually at Poole Hospital Postgraduate Education Centre, on other days he is at his practice in Merley.
Ian
Wyer works as a GP in Milborne Port, in North Dorset / South Somerset.
"I see my role as an educator as helping trainees to learn from experience and from each other - learn the things that can't easily be found in books. I want to help prepare our trainees to stay happy, healthy and up-to-date for the rest of their careers. My particular interests include communication skills and therapeutic consultations. My hobbies include relaxing with my family and getting outdoors - walking, mountain-biking and sailing."
On Wednesdays Ian is usually at Poole Hospital Postgraduate Education Centre on other days (except Friday) he is available at the practice.
Tabitha
Smith currently works as a freelance locum GP in Poole, Bournemouth and
Christchurch and for the Urgent Care Service in Dorset.
"Having recently been through the processes of MRCGP examination and PMETB certification, I hope to be able to advise and support GP trainees facing these challenges. I am also keen to ensure that GP registrars are provided with information and guidance about their career options at the end of their training and how to begin work as a locum. Outside work I unwind by trail-running in the beautiful New Forest, mountain biking with my husband and playing my violin."
On Wednesdays Tabitha is usually at Poole Hospital Postgraduate Education Centre. At other times she can be contacted by email.
Chris
Elfes works as a GP in Swanage
"I am privileged to be a GP, GP Trainer, Course Organiser, MRCGP Examiner and nMRCGP Assessor. Working as a GP Partner in a beautiful part of Dorset, combined with family life and sailing keeps me busy and grounded in the reality of General Practice. The application of knowledge as well as the challenges and rewards of a busy life consulting in the emotional front-line of undifferentiated diagnostic uncertainty continue to enthuse me."
On Wednesdays he is usually at Poole Hospital Postgraduate Education Centre.
